Introduction:

On 5th September 2023, the Poison Information Centre was relaunched to celebrate its upgraded capabilities including improved data collection, efficient call routing to medical experts, access to remote medical facilities, and the handling of inquiries beyond pesticide poisoning such as household detergents, industrial chemicals, pharmaceutical products, drug substances and poisons of animal and food origin. It also celebrated the continuous partnership with KNH through the signing of an MOU and at the same time highlight the invaluable support of various government bodies such as the PCPB, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Environment, Pharmacy and Poisons Board, and Veterinary Medicines Directorate, in promoting sustainable pesticide management and public health.

Why the campaign:

Pest control products are inherently toxic, necessitating responsible handling as per label instructions. However, irresponsible use, transportation, and storage can lead to exposure, resulting in poisoning cases, both intentional and accidental. The campaign aims to raise awareness among key stakeholders in poison incident management, including medical professionals, bodies like the Pharmacy and Poisons Board and the Ministry of Health, parents and guardians, farmers, and agrodealers. These groups play a crucial role in reducing the number of poisoning cases through education and proper practices.

Objectives:

  • To educate the public about the role and services of the PIC.
  • To encourage the public to use the PIC for poison emergency cases.
  • To get the public to know that the numbers are toll free.
  • To get the public to know of the upgraded capabilities of the PIC.
  • To create awareness on responsible use
  • Create linkage to Level 4/5 facilities
