KENYA HAZARDOUS WASTE PRODUCER RESPONSIBILITY ORGANIZATION (KEHAPRO)

About the Kenya Hazardous Waste Producer Responsible Organization Initiative (KEHAPRO)

Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) in partnership with aak-GROW, has formed the Kenya Hazardous Waste Producer Responsible (KEHAPRO) Initiative. It seeks to support the collective efforts of manufacturers to address and manage waste from hazardous products packaging, in line with the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Regulations, 2021.

The National Waste Policy outlines measures for handling various waste streams in Kenya.

One of the ways through which the private sector drives sustainable waste management is Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). The Regulations aim to provide the country with a synergized approach and outline the need for active private sector engagement in driving sustainable waste management. To this end, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) alongside other stakeholders have been working on the EPR Regulations that will see the country have 5 Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs), categorized as follows:

  • Non-hazardous products packaging (plastics, papers, aluminum, composite, glass, and carton).
  • Hazardous products packaging (industrial chemicals, oil, and lubricants, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, veterinary, cosmetics, paints, and solvents) and agricultural films.
  • Electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), mercury auto switches, thermostats, batteries, and accumulators.
  • End of life motor vehicles, automobiles, aircraft, locomotives.
  • Non-packaging items (plastics, glass, paper, cardboard), furniture (except wooden, metallic), rubber and tyres, artificial hair, diapers, and sanitary towels.
